The tall pines in Pinellas’s older neighborhoods predate most of the houses under them. They’re tough until something wounds them — construction over the roots, lightning, drought — and then bark beetles finish the argument fast.
A healthy slash pine asks almost nothing; a wounded one can’t be saved by asking. These are the tall natives that predate the neighborhoods under them. They handle wind respectably, but they’re unforgiving about root damage — construction, trenching, fill dirt — and once bark beetles colonize a stressed pine, the tree is finished and the priority becomes protecting its neighbors.
Knowing your pine
Sixty to ninety feet of straight trunk, plated red-brown bark, long needles in bundles, and a crown that starts where most trees end. Old-growth slash pines are living survey markers of pre-development Pinellas — many of the biggest stood before the plat maps were drawn. Their high, narrow crowns spill wind well, and their deep taproots anchor honestly; UF’s coastal research places pines mid-pack for wind resistance, better than their reputation.
When to trim in Pinellas
Sparingly. Pines don’t resprout along old wood — every green branch removed is gone forever, so “cleaning up” a pine means deadwood and genuinely necessary clearance, nothing cosmetic. Dead limbs 60 feet over a roof absolutely warrant removal (pine deadwood is heavy and drops without ceremony), but the canopy itself should be left alone. Any crew proposing to “thin out” a healthy pine crown is proposing to injure it for money.
What actually goes wrong here
The failure sequence is nearly always: stress first, beetles second. Lightning strike, construction over the roots, grade changes, drought on a compacted lot — then engraver beetles (Ips) or black turpentine beetles find the weakened tree, and the crown goes rust-brown in weeks. Diagnostics we look for: pitch tubes (popcorn-size resin blobs on the bark), fine boring dust in bark crevices, and the top-down browning pattern. Once a pine is successfully colonized there is no rescue spray — the honest work is prompt removal, both because a dead pine dries into a brittle hazard fast and because the brood inside it will fly to the healthy pines nearby.
The real DIY danger
Dead pines specifically. A dead oak holds together for years; a dead pine becomes a tower of disconnecting parts in months — bark sloughs, limbs drop free, and the dry trunk fibers don’t hold a notch predictably. Homeowner felling of a dead pine between houses is genuinely dangerous work disguised as a simple job. The other quiet mistake: parking heavy equipment or piling fill against a big pine during a remodel; the bill for that arrives two summers later as a brown crown.
What shapes the cost
Height dominates — everything on a big pine happens far off the ground and comes down on ropes. Condition is the multiplier: sound pines climb; dead ones often require a lift or crane precisely because the wood can’t be trusted. Removals near the beach or over structures price the logistics honestly. And timing matters more than usual: taking a beetle-killed pine this month protects every pine on the street; waiting a year buys a harder removal and possibly a second one.

My pine went brown in weeks. What happened?
Fast whole-tree browning in a pine usually means bark beetles — and beetles usually mean the tree was already stressed by lightning, root damage or drought. By the time a pine is fully brown it’s dead and drying; the conversation is about safe removal before it starts dropping.
Can a beetle-hit pine be saved?
Once a pine is successfully colonized, no — and it becomes a source for attacks on neighbors’ pines. What CAN be protected are the healthy pines nearby: prompt removal of the dead tree and avoiding wounds to the survivors matters more than any spray.
The builder next door is grading near my big pine. Should I worry?
Yes, honestly. Pines are extremely sensitive to root-zone disturbance — fill dirt, trenching and compaction within the dripline often start a decline that shows up one to three years later. Protecting the root zone now beats calling us for a removal in two summers.
